Capacious tea bowl, this chawan, 茶碗,  is a fundamental vessel for a Japanese tea set. Chawan do not feature handles because they are supposed to be held with two hands – as tea in Japan is served at a much lower temperature. Thinly thrown, they are pinched at a precise stage of the drying process, to allow for the best possible grip.
