Sake literally meaning “alcoholic beverage”, is better defined in Japan as nihonshu, “Japanese alcohol”. On everybody’s table since the Nara period, it can be served hot or cold in these small ceramic tumblers, guinomi,ぐい呑み, to be held with one hand and supported by the other.
