Chopstick rests, hashioki, 箸置き, are used to keep a tidy table. As order is so important on the Japanese table, hashioki becomes crucial. Placed underneath the plates, parallel to the table and pointing left, the chopsticks can easily be grabbed with the right hand, but if your host happens to be left-handed, be considerate and place them pointing right!
