rakuyaki _ hua n.3
rakuyaki _ hua n.3
Raku-yaki is an ancient Japanese technique where pieces are pulled from the kiln when still red-hot, exposed to the air and cooled in sawdust. A dramatic and fast process that results in smoked, darkened raw surfaces and beautiful craquelee effect on glazes.
No pattern is controllable, no crack is predictable - each piece of work hold the fiery memory of its fiery birth.
These shapes are inspired by the tall chawans that samurais used to carry along their travel: the long stem allows space for tying the vessel to the belt. The cavity underneath offers a pretty intense glimpse of the smoked naked clay.
